Voltage in Chile is 220 V / 50 Hz, and electrical devices need an adapter to connect them to the outlet, which can be easily found in supermarkets or hardware stores.

Eletric Devices
Climate and Clothing

Due to its geographical location, the Chilean seasons are the opposite to those in Europe or North America. The climate in Santiago is similar to the Mediterranean climate, with long and dry summers and short and temperate winters. The winter – from May to August – is the rainy season, and temperatures oscillate a fair amount (at night it can get down to zero degrees and during the day it fluctuates between 10ºC/50ºF and 25ºC/77ºF). Most accommodation and offices do not have central heating so we recommend that you bring warm clothing. However, the summer in Santiago – November to March – is dry and hot (maximum temperatures between 30ºC/86ºF to 35ºC/95ºF). At night it is pleasantly cool and almost never rains

Postal Services

Postal services work well in Chile, although somewhat slowly. The Central Post Office is located in the Plaza de Armas in the center of Santiago and is open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 7pm. Post offices are also located in other counties in Santiago.

International post is generally sent by air, and takes between 4 and 14 days to central Europe or to North America, which can be sped up by paying an additional fee for an express service. Important mail can be sent by registered mail. If you are looking for pretty postcards, you can find them in the Fine Arts Museum, as well as in the Pre-Columbian Museum in Santiago.

Customs

In principle, Chileans like courtesy and a certain formality, although as a foreigner you can enjoy a little leeway. First you have to get used to the greetings. Men shake hands while women, amongst each other as well as with men, give a quick kiss (only one) on the right cheek, even to strangers! Goodbyes work in the same way.

Being 15 minutes late to an appointment is acceptable. On the other hand, buses and airplanes tend to be very punctual. Avoid arriving on time if you are invited to a meal or a party, for otherwise you may find your hosts still finishing off their preparations when you arrive.

In general, between colleagues and acquaintances, “usted” (formal “you”) changes to “tu” (informal “you”) quickly, except in very formal situations. Young people (up to 35 years of age) especially can be addressed using “tu”. However, with older people or superiors, we recommend using the “usted” form even if the person addresses you using “tú”.

Currency

The national currency is the Chilean Peso (CLP), which uses the symbol $ – don’t confuse this with the dollar sign! Over the past few years, the annual inflation rate has been under 3 percent.

How to Withdraw Cash

The best way to get money in pesos in most of the cities in the country is by using your bank card or credit card in the Redbanc chain ATMs (there is a maximum of 200,000 CLP per day), for which the machines must have the Cirrus, Plus or Maestro symbols. Don’t forget to memorize your pin number! Your bank will charge a fee for each transaction (check before you leave), but it is generally low and you get a good exchange rate. Travellers’ checks are less common. If you bring money over in cash, US dollars or Euros, you can exchange them at foreign exchange offices (never on the street), which offer better rates than the banks. In Santiago there are various foreign exchange offices on Agustinas Street between Ahumada and Bandera Streets (open from Monday to Friday from 9 to 19 hrs., and on Saturday mornings). Others are close to the Manuel Montt, Pedro de Valdivia, and Los Leones metro stations. The foreign exchange offices at the airport don’t have such good rates.

Credit Cards

You can use your credit cards in many stores, supermarkets, minimarkets, restaurants, etc. Dollars or euros are received directly by only some travel agencies and large hotels.

Phone Calls

Long distance: For international calls from Chile, you must use a three-digit carrier, to which you add the corresponding country/city code. Public phones are increasingly scarce, while call centers allow better access to international calls. Many cyber cafes offer IP calls at even cheaper rates.

Pre-paid phone cards: Calls can be made from any phone using these cards. They can be purchased in kiosks and other points of sale. However, some ContactChile customers have reported high additional costs when attempting international calls.

Mobile Phones

Mobile phones or cellphones have eight digits and are recognizable by the prefix 09 or 569. For mobile-to-mobile calls, the prefix is not necessary

Newspapers

Newspapers and Magazines: The most important newspaper with the most cover is El Mercurio, which holds a fairly conservative line and is one of the oldest newspapers in Latin America, in print since 1827. Other newspapers are La Tercera, the evening paper La Segunda and free newspapers such as the Publimetro and La Hora. You can find updated and independent information in the online newspaper El Mostrador. In the case of magazines, political analysis can be found in Qué pasa and Ercilla. Crude satire and shocking articles characterize the The Clinic newspaper

Police

In Chile, there are two police entities, the uniformed police (Carabineros) and the civil police (Investigaciones). The Carabineros are responsible for public safety on the streets and are widely approved of by Chileans. A policeman may ask for your ID (this is legal, although infrequent, in Chile), so it is recommended that you always carry your ID card or passport (or a copy) with you. Never try to bribe a policeman in Chile!

Tipping

A tip is expected in restaurants of around 10%, which is not included in the bill. It is customary to receive all of the change first, and then leave the tip on the table. In many places, such as service stations or parking lots, employees expect a tip of 100 or 200 pesos, while tips are not usually given to taxi drivers

Health

You are not exposed to any particular health risks in Chile, so no special vaccinations are required. However, it is recommended that you protect yourself from typhoid fever, poliomyelitis, hepatitis and tetanus. If you travel to rural areas within Chile, the rabies vaccine may be useful. Those from yellow fever areas must have the necessary vaccination in order to visit Easter Island

Medical attention in the Santiago clinics and other large cities in Chile is of the quality of what is available in developed countries. However, obtaining the same medical care in rural areas or emergency hospitals can be more difficult. Before travelling to Chile, check to see if your health insurance has international coverage, or whether you should obtain additional insurance. Private clinics accept credit cards as a guarantee. There is a good pharmacy network where you can find any medication you need

Safety

In comparison with other countries in Latin America, Chile is a very safe country for travellers. There are always exceptions, such as dangerous neighborhoods or the centers of large cities. Be wary of pickpockets (well-dressed), who work quickly on the metro, on buses, or in crowded places.

Armed assaults are less frequent. Avoid walking alone in the San Cristóbal Hill area and the Santa Lucía Hill in Santiago at night, and in the hills of Valparaíso

Chile is a safe country, even for those who travel alone, provided that they use common sense and take basic precautions. Women must appear to be unafected when faced with machos, although they will notice that these men are only bothersome when they are in groups, and only verbally.
